BMW R65 1979 Part 3 (Rebuild part 3)

The last part is often the most difficult, tuning, getting the bike to run as you and, more importantly, as the customer expects.

Well this one was no exception, I fiddled and fiddled with balancing the carbs,I tried the wise way, with pressure gauges, I tried the well trained ear method, in-between ridding around the block.

It started ok but gradually the engine choked, there's a clue there, I tried feeling pressure from the exhaust and ah that gave the best clue, because one side was defiantly blowing less than the other.

The exhaust looked ok but on removal of the silencers there was a lot of rust inside, after banging them and ending with a lot of rust I had no other alternative but to replace both silencers. The headers were perfect.

The replacement silencers were sourced from a specialist craftsman in stainless steel, once fitted the bike was a pleasure and ran like the proverbial sowing machine

This was a lovely bike to ride, even at 31 years of age, and will give my customer many years of wonderful ridding, I was sorry to see it go but enjoyed the look on his face.

Re: BMW R65 1979 Part 3 (Rebuild part 3)

Hi Len,
It's a fantastic blog! I'm reading you from France and I have the same R65.
However I write to you today because I've a big problem with mine. I bought it one month ago, but the previous owner had started to restore it and had already removed all the electrical wiring when he sold it to me. Plus I think I'm missing a few stages!
In short, this is my first restoration, and there knowing absolutely nothing, I wanted to know if you still have some pictures of the reassembly of your electrical wiring? I am totally lost and you are certainly the only one who can help me ..
Thanking you in advance
Sincerely,
Richard
